Return Policy

At myPharmacy, patient safety, public health, and product integrity are our top priorities. We strictly follow all applicable federal and state regulations, including guidelines from the FDA, CDC, and Virginia Board of Pharmacy. This policy outlines which items are eligible for return and the rationale behind exclusions.

Prescription Medications – No Returns or Exchanges

In accordance with Virginia Code § 54.1-3411.1, once prescription drugs leave our premises, they cannot be returned or reused, regardless of condition.

This includes:

  • Opened or sealed prescriptions
  • Medications picked up in error or no longer needed
  • Expired products
  • Refrigerated or injectable items
  • Controlled substances

Why Not?
Prescription drugs are sensitive to temperature, humidity, and handling. Any unknown exposure outside pharmacy custody may compromise safety.

  • FDA and VDH reports show returned meds have caused patient harm due to contamination or tampering.
  • Chain of custody cannot be verified once the medication leaves the pharmacy.

No exceptions. No store credit.

Compounded Medications – Strictly No Returns

Customized compounds are prepared specifically for individual patients and are non-transferable.
Under USP <795> and <797> guidelines:

  • Compounds are made to order with ingredients that may have short stability
  • Reselling violates federal compounding law

All compounded prescriptions are final sale.
No exceptions. No store credit.

Medical Supplies – Final Sale

Non-returnable items include:

  • Blood pressure monitors
  • Glucometers and test strips
  • Thermometers
  • Crutches, braces, and mobility aids

Why Not?
These items often come into contact with skin, saliva, or blood.

  • Once opened (or if packaging appears tampered), cross-contamination cannot be ruled out.
  • CDC investigations have linked reused devices to outbreaks of infection.

All sales final. No exceptions.

Herbal Products, Supplements & Edibles – No Returns

Includes:

  • Herbal teas, powders, tinctures
  • Vitamins and supplements
  • Functional foods, protein bars, or beverages

Why Not?
According to the FDA and VA Poison Control:

  • Improper storage or tampering can lead to mold, bacterial growth, or oxidation
  • Resold ingestibles have led to GI infections, allergic reactions, and hospitalizations

No returns. No exchanges. No store credit.

Rental Equipment & In-Store Services – Non-Refundable

This includes:

  • Rental equipment (nebulizers, walkers, wheelchairs)
  • Point-of-care testing (flu, strep, A1C, COVID-19)
  • Immunizations (flu, COVID-19, shingles, HPV, etc.)
  • Consultations (wellness, supplements, medication reviews)

Why Not?

  • Rental equipment must be sterilized between uses—costly and time-consuming
  • Services once rendered cannot be reversed

No refunds. No store credit.

OTC (Over-the-Counter) Products – Strictly Limited Returns

Returns may be considered only if ALL the following apply:

  • Returned within 7 calendar days of purchase
  • Item is unopened, unused, untampered, and in resellable condition
  • Original receipt is provided
  • Return is personally approved by a pharmacist, pharmacy manager, or owner

Examples That Led to This Policy:

  • A bottle of melatonin left in a hot car for 8+ hours lost potency and caused sleep disturbances
  • A sealed bottle of vitamins was returned with signs of internal tampering—similar incidents at other pharmacies led to bacterial infections

All returns are at the sole discretion of pharmacy leadership.

Why This Policy Exists

We serve a vulnerable community: families, elders, children, and the immunocompromised. This policy is rooted in:

  • Patient safety and public health
  • Strict compliance with state and federal pharmacy law
  • Professional integrity and community trust

If you wouldn’t want a returned item dispensed to your child, we won’t risk it for someone else’s.

Refunds

  • If a return is approved, the refund will be issued only to the original payment method
  • No store credit will be offered for excluded product categories
  • Refunds may take 5–7 business days depending on your bank

Right to Refuse Any Return

myPharmacy reserves the right to deny any return, refund, or exchange even if general conditions are met, including:

  • Suspected product tampering or fraud
  • Packaging damage
  • Missing components or altered item appearance
  • Concerns for safety or compliance

All decisions are final and made in consideration of public health.
