Free Medication Therapy Management (MTM) Classes

Medication Therapy Management (MTM) is a free service at myPharmacy where patients can bring all of their medications — prescription, over-the-counter, supplements, and herbals — and sit down with a licensed pharmacist for a comprehensive review.

These free classes help patients better understand their medications, reduce side effects, identify potential drug interactions, and improve health outcomes through safer, more effective medication use.

What Happens During an MTM Session?

  • One-on-one review of every medication you’re taking
  • 🔍 Assessment of drug effectiveness, safety, and purpose
  • ⚠️ Identification of unnecessary, outdated, or duplicate therapies
  • 🔗 Interaction check for drug-drug, drug-food, and supplement-medication risks
  • 💡 Suggestions for better timing, dosage, or alternatives
  • Answers to all your questions from a licensed pharmacist

⚠️ Common Drug Interactions & Why They Matter

Understanding interactions can literally save lives. Here are a few examples we cover during MTM sessions:

Warfarin + NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen)

  • Interaction: Increased risk of bleeding
  • Why it matters: Can cause serious internal bleeding, especially in seniors or post-surgical patients.

Metformin + Alcohol

  • Interaction: Increased risk of lactic acidosis (a rare but serious side effect)
  • Why it matters: Can be fatal if untreated.

Simvastatin + Grapefruit Juice

  • Interaction: Grapefruit inhibits breakdown of statins
  • Why it matters: Increases statin levels in your blood, raising risk of muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) and kidney damage

Lisinopril (or other ACE inhibitors) + Potassium supplements or salt substitutes

  • Interaction: Dangerously high potassium levels (hyperkalemia)
  • Why it matters: Can lead to irregular heartbeat or cardiac arrest.

SSRIs (like sertraline) + Triptans (migraine meds)

  • Interaction: Risk of serotonin syndrome (too much serotonin)
  • Why it matters: Can cause agitation, confusion, rapid heart rate, and even seizures.
